
Mihalis Porfyris
Mihalis Porfyris is a Greek cellist, founding member of the ECHO String Quartet, and long-standing collaborator of the Greek National Opera and Camerata – Chamber Orchestra of Athens. He is active as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and educator.
Biography
Mihalis Porfyris was born in Athens-Greece. At the age of 9 he started studying cello at the Hellenic Conservatory of Athens, from where he graduated earning Diploma with Honours plus a monetary award in memoriam of M.Varvoglis. He then continued his specialization in solo cello by taking master class courses in Germany with N.Tchaikofskaya and also in chamber music playing in Greece with Fr. Wibaut. From 1996 he has played in the orchestra at the National Opera of Greece and from 2007 onwards he has been collaborating with Camerata – Chamber Orchestra of Athens. As a solo cellist and furthermore one of the founders of “ECHO” string quartet, an ensemble with a large number of live performances and classical concerts around the country, he participates in a variety of musical projects: concerts, discography, television, theatre and cinema soundtrack recordings. He has collaborated with a number of composers and wellknown artists in Greece and abroad. He taught cello and chamber music at the Musical School of Athens [2002-2005] and is currently a professor at the Conservatory of Nea Makri in Athens, Greece.
